Check boxes (sometimes called tick boxes) allow the user to answer Yes or No to a question generally. The box will be either ticked or not ticked at first and will act as a "switch". So clicking in an empty box produces a tick, but clicking on a ticked box clears the tick leaving an empty box.

Note:  There may be several check boxes on a window all of which are completely independent of each other. There is a fundamental difference between check boxes and radio buttons.
